China, Mozambique pledge to cement defense relations

  BEIJING, Oct. 23 (ChinaMil) — Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan said on Thursday that China is willing to work with Mozambique to promote the further development of defense and military relations between the two countries.

Gen. Chang made the remarks when meeting with Atanasio Mtumuke, the visiting Mozambican defense minister in Beijing on the afternoon of Oct. 22.

Mozambique is China’s good friend and partner in Africa, Chang said. Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Mozambique, the China-Mozambique friendly cooperative relations have always been developing healthily and smoothly, and the two sides have carried out fruitful and effective cooperation in various fields, Chang continued.

In recent years, the military-to-military relations between the two countries have been maintaining constant and stable development, and the Chinese side is willing to work with the Mozambican side to maintain exchange of personnel visits at various levels, deepen cooperation in military education and training, constantly exploring the cooperation potential between the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Armed Forces for the Defense of Mozambique (FADM), Chang added.

Mtumuke briefed his Chinese counterpart on Mozambique’s economic development and military construction. He expressed that the Mozambican side is willing to work with the Chinese side to continuously expand the high-level exchange of visits and strengthen the pragmatic cooperation in such fields as personnel training to constantly upgrade the friendly relations between the two countries and the two militaries.

Before their talks, Gen. Chang held a welcoming ceremony for Mtumuke and accompanied him to review the honor guard of the three services of the PLA.
