Within the scheduled training flights, crews of tactical bombers Su-24M of the Baltic Fleet naval aviation practiced air-to-air refueling from an IL-78 tanker. It was carried out individually and in pairs day and night.

The air-to-air refueling is one of the most difficult elements of flight practice. The pilots approach the tanker at the alttitudes of 2000-5000 metres and at speeds of 500-600 km/h. Keeping the distance of 10-15 m, they contact the probe and the drogue and maintain the flight parameters until the end of refueling.

At night, additional light was used on both the tanker and the receiving aircraft.
