Attack in Istanbul

Federal President Joachim Gauck has expressed his shock and profound sadness over attack in Istanbul on 12 January: “What happened in Istanbul today was horrific. Once more, innocent people, including many Germans, were killed in a heinous terrorist attack. I am deeply shocked and saddened by this terrible news. My thoughts and profound sympathy go out to the victims, as well as their friends and families, at this difficult time.”

State visits to the Republic of Korea and Mongolia

The Federal President and Daniela Schadt travelled to the Republic of Korea and to Mongolia for state visits from 10 to 16 October. The visit to South Korea focused on 25 years of German unity and 70 years of Korea’s division. During his trip to Mongolia from 14 to 16 October the Federal President held political talks with the President and the Chairman of Parliament.

Official visit to the USA

Federal President Joachim Gauck and Daniela Schadt travelled to the United States of America for an official visit from 5 to 8 October. The Federal President met US President Barack Obama at the White House in Washington. Twenty five years after the reunification of Germany, the visit focused on transatlantic relations, the German American friendship, shared political and economic aims and common values.
