Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (20 January) on the death of Lord Weidenfeld:

With Lord Weidenfeld, the world has lost an exceptional personality. He left a deep impression on us all throughout his life with his diversity, astuteness and intellect. As a builder of bridges, he devoted all of his energy to issues that are more relevant than ever – from religious dialogue to Europe’s relations with Israel to European integration. He held firm to his values and ideals even when encountering resistance or going against mainstream thinking.

His work as a publisher and author was also characterised by this perseverance. Lord Weidenfeld moved and campaigned in political and journalistic circles until the very last. We shall miss him.
