Quarterly mortality report, England: Q2 – April to June 2018

Today’s figures show there were provisionally 120,645 deaths registered in England in Q2 2018 (April to June). 2,968 more deaths than the five-year average (2013 to 2017).

However, the number of deaths registered in Q2 2018 was 3,623 deaths fewer than expected if the Q2 five-year average mortality rate continued this year.

Addressing the number of deaths that occurred in Q2 2018, there were specific instances of increased morality which coincided with periods of increased temperature in England.

The question of deaths which might be attributable to a heatwave will be addressed in the next quarterly release.
