Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Denis Mercier, today released NATO’s Strategic Foresight Analysis 2017 Report. The Strategic Foresight Analysis report identifies trends that will shape the future security environment and possible implications for the Alliance out to 2035.
It offers planners and decision-makers a shared understanding of the future security environment and is intended to inform their work and promote discussion of how NATO can be ready for the future. The report is available on our website’s Futures Work.
At the launch of the event, General Mercier said, “The most important added value of the SFA is its shared perspective, at 29, that helps to reinforce cohesion. It is important to have a common understanding of the future trends and their military implications. It will enable us to better coordinate our national defence plans to face future challenges, and to grasp new opportunities.
The SFA is also the major document to inform national security reviews, and defence and security strategies. The Alliance is in the midst of a cycle of political, military and institutional adaptation.”
An advance copy of the report was sent to NATO’s Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, who commended Supreme Allied Commander Transformation for producing this, “valuable contribution to the wider policy debate here in NATO Headquarters”.
General Mercier hosted the American launch event in Washington, DC. He will also publicly introduce the new Strategic Foresight Analysis in Europe at the Berlin Security Conference on November 28th.
The Strategic Foresight Analysis is the first of two documents in the Long Term Transformation Programme that provide Supreme Allied Commander Transformation’s vision of the future security environment out to 2035 and beyond. The report is the intellectual foundation for a follow-on report, the Framework for Future Alliance Operations, which will be published in Spring 2018.
