AIR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM An interview with Mr. Nir Bassa, Urecsys CEO By Eyal Avidov

How to use smart ventilation to combat the Coronavirus (COVID19).

“Urecsys (https://www.urecsys.com) is a rising star in the anti-air-pollution market. The company has created an innovative technology to fight the air pollution in the one place it endangers us most- indoors. Urecsys’ technology has already been tested and proven effective across various environments and is been sought after by key players in the global market as well as various governmental and municipal authorities around the world. Urecsys’ R&D department, led by published researchers and specialists in various fields have been reviewing articles and guidelines regarding the COVID-19 from authorities and agencies all over the world and has formulated and defined the most appropriate parameters of ventilation and indoor climate control, in order to support the attempts to deal with the COVID-19 challenge in buildings” says Mr. Nir Bassa the URECYSE CEO

As is evident from scientific literature, the rate of infection and the severity of the disease are affected by a number of parameters in a building including: Ttemperature, Humidity, Air pollution levels and ventilation. Consequently, the Urecsys’ innovative technology may significantly reduce COVID-19’s rate of infection and its impact on people’s health, as the Urecsys system is optimizing those parameters in real time while operating and regulating systems in the building and contributing to the reduction of the infection rate by the virus.

The system helps fighting the virus in four ways:

  • Optimizing climatee conditions to reduce the virus’s survival in the building
  • Reducing infection rate and the vulnerability to infection among those staying in the building.
  • Reducing Public Exposure to Air Pollution, which may contribute to the reduction of the infection rate and improve cardiopulmonary conditions as a starting point.
  • Reduced risk of spreading the disease as a result of common faults in ventilation management

Optimizing climate conditions to reduce the virus’s survival in the building

“Urecsys strives to produce a short but effective period of increased temperature, outside of working hours and specifically tailored for each building, that might help to shorten survival of the virus on surfaces throughout the building such as desks, stationery, chair handles, etc. Operating such ventilation protocol will impair the virus’s survival on surfaces throughout the building and will help to reduce the probability of infection by contact with a surface, from one day to the next. Incorrect management of these parameters and the lack of real-time measurements and forecasts for the next few hours can cause moisture over walls and surfaces, which can promote the development and proliferation of the virus and even damage to components of the structure itself. Urecsys’ unique technology can perform these careful management computations for every building separately and provide for tailor-made conditions to combat COVID-19 in the most effective way possible”, says Nir

Reducing infection rate and the vulnerability to infection among those staying in the building

Urecsys is combining two strategies in order to manage the climate conditions in the building to improve the COVID-19 fighting

  • Moderately raing the temperature in the building in order to to reduce the virus’s survival in the building.
  • Optimize relative humidity in the building which is expected to contribute by providing dryer air to the building:
Research shows dryer conditions contribute in reducing COVID-19’s radius of infection, as well as promoting the body’s respiratory defenses by triggering “mucociliary clearance”– the dynamic mucosa lining that covers and washes the respiratory tract.

Urecsys achieves a balance between the actions required to deal with COVID-19 and maintaining a reasonable comfort of the occupants. The system quickly learns how to raise temperatures in a building, in various situations and conditions, while maintaining reasonable comfort. Feedback from measurement instruments, and from the building’s users and managers will be processed by the system for setting boundary commands.

In order to regulate and maintain a correct level of humidity, it is necessary to use a system that calculates the “dew point” in the structure in real-time and on the basis of geographical databases, forecasts and is based on real-time temperature and humidity measurements both indoors, outdoors and in the ventilation ducts. Intervening in humidity management can be harmful, if not conducted according to Urecsys’ protocols. Dynamically optimizing temperature and humidity is challenging – for instance, increasing indoor humidity followed by an outdoor decrease in temperature can create condensation, damage the structure and promote proliferation of biological contaminants. Urecsys possesses the knowledge and data needed to make real-time decisions about the temperature and humidity levels in the building, while attempting to reduce viral survival, support the respiratory system and avoiding uncomfortable and undesirable consequences.

Reducing Public Exposure to Air Pollution may contribute to the reduction of the infection rate and improve cardiopulmonary conditions as a starting point.

Many studies show that there is a strong correlation between exposure to air pollution and the probability of contracting viruses affecting the airways (such as the coronavirus) and the chances of developing serious complications.

Urecsys’ technology harnesses scientific knowledge and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for optimizing indoor air quality, ensuring significant electricity savings and energy consumption reduction, and achieving unprecedented & proven reduction of air pollution levels in the building. In every specific building, Urecsys takes into account the levels of air pollution in the urban area surrounding the building, the penetration rate of the urban air pollution into that building, the balance between CO2 and oxygen levels, odours, humidity, temperatures, and the most advanced ventilation standards, with constant quality control and quality assurance by scientists. system studies the behaviour of air pollution in and around that specific building and analyses external correlations and the characteristics of the pollution penetration for each building individually.

By reducing the health damage caused by the air pollution itself, Urecsys is already making a significant contribution to the cardiopulmonary health of the residents. People with impaired cardiopulmonary health and functions, should they contract COVID-19, are potentially faced with severe complications and are likely to show severe expressions of the disease. Some air pollutants such as NOx and Ozone may cause inflammation of the respiratory system. Such inflammation will disturb the structure of the layers covering the respiratory system, impairing further both the mucous layers’ effectiveness and the epithelial layers as the first line of defence against respiratory infections.

Reduced risk of spreading the disease as a result of common faults in ventilation management

The system ensures compliance with ventilation standards in all circumstances and at all times and creates the healthiest and safest conditions in the building.

Smart – The automated nature of the Urecsys system ensures a continuous improvement of the conditions in the building and prevents of human error. incorrect ventilation of a structure in which the carrier of the disease is located may be a recipe for mass infection. Taking all the necessary parameters into account is beyond any human capacity and requires a smart, top of the line technology which was specifically designed to deal with constantly changing conditions.

Reducing the risk of increased infection rate due to common malfunctions – In many buildings, malfunctions and failures in the ventilation system may not be detected within a reasonable time. Urecsys can provide an automatic detection and warning mechanism for any malfunction and interruption in the operation of the fresh air system.

Urecsys transforms the building into a “protective bubble” against the urban air pollution and other harmful agents that may be generated or supported by nonoptimal air quality conditions. When it comes to the air we breathe, Urecsys is the best holistic solution and is based on scientific knowledge and quality assurance. We also anticipate a significant impact on seasonal infectious illnesses for buildings located in polluted city-centres and house health- vulnerable populations, including those with an increased risk of respiratory infections due to age and pre-existing illnesses.

In the short term – the best real-time optimization of climate conditions is achieved by Urecsys. This may significantly contribute to both reducing the infection rate in the workplace and the probability of severe outcomes if one is infected. If spread broadly, Urecsys has the potential to have a real impact on infection rates and the spread of disease in the workplace.

In the long term – Urecsys’ technology will help dealing with an expected second outbreaks of the coronavirus as well as other pathogens that may spread throughout the city, specifically during the winter months. Together with the reduction of air pollution and the reduction in electricity consumption, the economic significance of Urecsys may be immense. It can be manifested in the saving of many sick days taken by employees, reducing the loss of working days caused by such diseases each year.
